Most Virtual terminals are used by online entrepreneurs. The reason is that the business does not have the volume to justify a fully automated online integration. So the terminal is used  as a temporary solution, until the business activity grows enough to allow for a larger operations.

Modern virtual terminals are accessed by SSL. So they are easy to use and they allow separate authorization and settlement transactions. They are also connected to AVS and CVV fraud tests and support multi-user access with multiple permissions.

When you login , your system of credit card processing is enabled. By using an online graphical user interface (GUI), you can enter credit card details, given to you by the purchaser and log in a credit card processing transaction just like using a physical device.


Since an online Virtual Terminal is a web-based application, it is accessable from any computer that has internet connectivity by using the correct user name and password. This can be a very convenient tool.

When the business is big enough to go with a full fledged system, most online businesses will maintain a virtual terminal connectivity for back up and back office purposes.

Having the advantage of portability in a wireless terminal is a big plus because it's a time saver. And we all know that time is money. You can process your transactions anywhere that you have phone reception.There is also less equipment to purchase if you have a smartphone or other mobile device. In fact, some vendors will often include a processing method, factored into the cost of the wireless terminal.  Mobile apps will work with someone like Authorize.net.

Other processing alternatives like I-pads are available. You can manually enter the card number or, using available hardware, swipe the cards directly. Vendors, such as Square, have the app to do this. You can also download a card reader app at low cost or even for free, in some cases. Some companies offer discounted services for non profits and public institutions if they would like to take advantage of this.

Last but not least , are the security issues you need to be aware of. For instance, does your wireless terminal or application encrypt the transaction for protection? If the card is swiped, does it show the full number, or just the last four digits. Does the device store the credit card numbers? If it does store the information, it shouldn't.

Remember to keep your wireless terminal or smartphone safe. Always leave it in a safe place because they are easy to steal and are an attractive target for this reason.
